Tata evaluates a 7-seat Sierra and AWD variants enabled by the ARGOS platform
Tata Motors is examining the possibility of adding new body styles to the recently launched Sierra, including a potential three-row version. With the five-seat Sierra priced from Rs. 11.49 lakhs (ex-showroom), the company has room to introduce variants positioned above it without clashing with the Harrier, Safari or Curvv.
Three-Row Sierra Being Evaluated
Now that the standard Sierra is on sale, Tata Motors is studying whether a longer-wheelbase, seven-seat derivative makes sense for the brand. Company executives indicate that any expansion of the Sierra line-up would need to bring additional volumes while maintaining clear differentiation from existing SUVs. A 3-row layout could serve this requirement, allowing Tata to participate in an expanding segment that sits between mid-size and full-size SUVs.
A three-row Sierra, if approved, would likely be priced above the current five-seat model but remain below larger D-segment offerings.
AWD Versions Also in Development
Beyond practicality-focused variants, Tata Motors is working on a more capable, all-wheel-drive Sierra. The manufacturer has confirmed that AWD is under development for both internal combustion and electric versions. The Sierra EV is slated to arrive next year with an AWD option from launch, while the ICE-based AWD model is expected in early 2027.
The AWD variant is aimed at buyers seeking moderate off-road capability without sacrificing everyday usability, a space where Tata currently does not offer an ICE 4×4 SUV.
ARGOS Platform Enables Future Flexibility
The Sierra line-up sits on the new ARGOS platform, which has been engineered to support a wide range of powertrains including petrol, diesel, CNG and hybrid. It also allows for multiple wheelbases, AWD hardware and varied interior configurations, giving Tata significant flexibility to build additional versions without major structural changes.
Tata Motors leadership describes ARGOS as one of the company’s most comprehensive development programmes, involving a new architecture, new powertrains and updated manufacturing systems.
The final decision on expanding the Sierra into a family of models will depend on early market performance and customer response to the newly launched SUV.
