
2026 Mercedes CLA debuts with up to 792 km of EV range, hybrid engine option
Mercedes-Benz is kicking off a new chapter for its entry-level CLA with a newly revamped vehicle for 2026. While the exterior retains a similar appearance, the modifications under the skin represent a substantial departure, particularly with the addition of an all-electric model. As the brand works toward electrification, the new CLA offers a combination of mild-hybrid and completely electric powertrains, with diesel options removed.
Dimensions
The 2026 CLA has a larger footprint than its predecessor. The body has been enlarged by 33 mm, bringing it to 4722 mm in length, which is longer than the previous generation C-Class. The width has expanded by one inch to 1854 mm, while the entire height has increased by 28 mm to 1468 mm. The wheelbase has also been increased by 61 mm, now measuring 2789 mm.
Cargo space has also decreased slightly, with the trunk now giving 405 litres of storage—54 litres less than previously. However, the all-electric version compensates with a front trunk, or "frunk," which adds 71 litres of storage. Notably, this is the first modern Mercedes to have a front trunk in almost 90 years.
Design
Visually, the 2026 CLA has an evolutionary rather than revolutionary approach. The front and back have slim light bars in keeping with current design trends, and flush door handles contribute to a smoother silhouette. Despite its coupe-like design, the CLA is a regular sedan with a trunk rather than a liftback. Its aerodynamic efficiency is likewise impressive, with the most streamlined variant having a drag coefficient of only 0.21.
Inside, the cabin has undergone considerable changes. A trio of screens dominates the dashboard, which includes a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a standard 14-inch infotainment display. The digital experience is enhanced by an optional 14-inch passenger screen, known as the MBUX Superscreen. A head-up display with a 12.2-inch picture is also available as an option. A Burmester sound system with 16 speakers adds to the cabin's premium vibe, and the panoramic sunroof, which is standard on all versions, uses heat-insulating laminated glass to decrease glare.
The new CLA differs from its predecessor in terms of climate control. The traditional temperature buttons have been replaced by touchscreen controls, which are becoming more popular in newer vehicles. Meanwhile, the center console has a floating design with integrated cupholders, a wireless charging pad, and more storage underneath.
Suspension & Engine
The 2026 CLA is underpinned by a new multi-link rear suspension borrowed from higher-end Mercedes models, which promises greater ride quality. Wheel diameters range from 17 to 19 inches, which influences both comfort and handling.
The petrol-powered CLA has a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This engine is combined with a 48-volt mild hybrid system and an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Mercedes has verified two alternative power outputs for this engine, although particular numbers have yet to be revealed. Buyers will be able to choose between front- and all-wheel drive.
For those looking for an electric drivetrain, the CLA 250+ and CLA 350 4Matic models provide distinct performance levels. The CLA 250+ is rear-wheel-drive, with a single motor producing 268 horsepower and 335 Nm of torque. The CLA 350 4Matic, which features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, boosts output to 349 horsepower and 515 Nm of torque. A rear-mounted two-speed transmission is intended to maximize performance, with the first gear suited to city driving and the second gear improving highway efficiency.
Performance figures indicate the base electric CLA can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hr in 6.7 seconds, while the dual-motor version achieves the sprint in 4.9 seconds. Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 210 km/hr. Notably, the all-wheel-drive variant operates in front-wheel-drive mode under normal conditions to maximise efficiency, engaging the front motor only when additional traction is needed.
Battery and Charging
With an 85-kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack, the electric CLA has a long driving range. Under the WLTP cycle, the rear-wheel-drive model can travel up to 792 km on a single charge, while the all-wheel-drive variant achieves up to 771 km. With 800-volt architecture, the EV supports DC fast charging at an impressive 325 kW, allowing it to gain 325 km of range in just 10 minutes under optimal conditions.
Later this year, Mercedes wants to release a more cheap electric CLA with a 58-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, providing an alternative to the present chemistry.
The new generation Mercedes CLA is scheduled to be launched in India later this year.
