The Citroen C3 Turbo stands out for its potent performance from the 110hp, 1.2-litre engine and exceptional ride quality. Both MT and AT gearboxes are smooth, and it handles quite well, too. Citroen has also fixed the issue of lacking features, and its great value at its price. However, the sparse service network will be a limitation.
Nissan Magnite

The Nissan Magnite’s 100hp, 1.0-litre turbo-engine and CVT combo is one of the smoothest automatic powertrains in the compact segment. It’s also decently-equipped and comfortable, has a premium-looking interior and handles in a predictable manner. It, however, could do with better noise insulation.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx

The Maruti Fronx’s 100hp, BoosterJet 1.0-litre engine offers refined and linear performance. The smooth AT gearbox is the pick of the range and it’s also got a sporty edge to its handling. It also scores well on space and comfort, but it’s the most expensive SUV on this list. Alternately, one can also look at the badge-engineered Toyota Taisor.
Renault Kiger

The Renault Kiger is related to the Magnite, carrying over the same smooth turbo-petrol CVT powertrain. It also has a nice ride and handling balance like the Nissan counterpart, and the features set is comparable, too. However, the crossover-esque design hampers its desirability, and the cabin ergonomics aren’t as sorted as the Magnite.
Tata Punch
Autocar India rating: 7/10

Tata Punch’s new and much-needed 120hp, 1.2-litre turbo-petrol offers strong performance, but it only comes with a MT gearbox, which itself isn’t particularly slick. The Punch has a premium interior, class-leading features and a sorted ride and handling balance, but it’s the smallest car on this list and top variants overlap with the Nexon.
